DIY Jobs
Many people tend to keep the old t-shirts finding them perhaps years later in the old room where they slept at home with their grandparents or parents. Through images that are calm or super-colored it is possible to relive a whole life, the years of high school, the first outings with friends, maybe some little pranks that always hid from their parents. A simple but at the same time very original and interesting idea is to create a blanket of memories with these old t-shirts, to keep for oneself or to give to one’s children. In addition to t-shirts, we can also use childhood leotards or those little dresses from when you were two or three years old. Bandanas or a scarf of the past from which to draw particular remnants of fabric thanks to the different fabric Covered with Memories.
Needed:
- T-Shirt
- Fleece Fabric Of The Desired Size To Make The Blanket
- Cutting Mat To Be Precise, Cutter And Patchwork Ruler
- Plaster, Scissors And Square If You Do Not Have The Previous Tools
- Pins
- Sewing Machine
Procedure
The first operation is very simple, just cut out the stitches on the front trying to be as precise as possible. Whoever has the cutting mat supplied can simply place the shirt over it and follow the team to make a precise cut, it will simply extract a piece of fabric. perfect. With chalk and team it is a bit more difficult but not impossible, just sketch the perfect box and then cut it, always following the team to make a clean cut. It is not necessary that all the remnants are of the same size, it will be precisely the diversity that makes the blanket of memories more beautiful and original. For smaller meshes you can make remnants of about 15 cm, for larger ones you can get up to 30 cm.
Sew the pieces
After getting the various rectangles from the shirts, it’s time to sew them together to make a sort of sheet. Performing this work by hand is not recommended since it will take a long time and the pieces will not be firm enough and well sewn, it is advisable to use the sewing machine. Just make a simple straight stitch with the machine to join the cut-outs of the shirts, there must not be a precise order, to facilitate the work you can first join the larger ones and then the smaller ones. It can also be very useful to iron and starch the scraps of fabric to make the sheet better. An example to have a base to follow is to unite approximately seven rectangles for the length and thus make strips with all the meshes.
Quilting
The time has come to fix the sheet obtained with the mesh to the remnant of piles. Even to do this job you need to use the sewing machine to fix the two fabrics at best. First, place the sheet over the fleece fabric and fasten it well with safety pins, so it will be easier to work small areas at a time. With the sewing machine, setting the appropriate setting, quilt along all the seams that join the rectangles. At the end of the work with the cutter or a pair of scissors, even the edges to avoid excesses of pile or t-shirt and to round the corners like a quilt.
The edge
One of the details not to be overlooked is the edge of the blanket of Covered with Memories, necessary to create a more precise and professional finish that gives that extra touch. To make the edging, just cut strips at least 8 cm long from the back of the t-shirts and join them with the sewing machine to make a long strip. Using an iron, fold the outer edges of the strip towards the center by squeezing them well and dividing it and folding it in half. To fix the edge to the blanket you need the sewing machine and use a zigzag stitch along the entire perimeter. The memory blanket is ready to be put on display on the sofa. An alternative to create a more particular edge is to use different fabrics, such as lace or satin,
The blanket of memories
Realizing this project requires a lot of patience, since you first need to gather a lot of t-shirts from which to take the scraps of fabric for the rectangles and not everyone is willing to ruin the memories of the past that have been in the drawer for many years.
Moreover, the realization of the patchwork is not very simple, especially those who love perfection will have difficulty in searching for the perfect combination for the fabrics, the most sentimental can follow the chronological order by placing the remnants taken from the oldest meshes up to the most recent ones, creating a sort of memory album. Those who prefer precision could make scraps identical in length and width, then squares and merge them according to color or details that resurface in their own memory.
Finally the most creative will find in the diversity the right order to follow, just place them on the pile at random according to their inspiration and change them at will until the final result is satisfactory. The blanket of memories will be a very envied creation if put on display above the sofa and an excellent method to recycle what was no longer used to make room for new projects.
If created to make a gift, as any work made by hand will certainly have an added value that will not go unnoticed: the ideal is to give it to a new mother for her baby, a quilt that represents a real album of memories in format extra large to always carry with you. just place them on the pile at random according to your inspiration and change them as you like until the final result is satisfactory.
